    Abstract

    Disinfection using ultraviolet light is one way to eliminate bacterial pathogens, other than Cl2. This study aimed to investigate the influence of sample depth variation exposuring with stirring to reduce the number of Escherichia coli in water samples at several time intervals of exposure. Optimum reduction of the number of E. coli reached 85% if accompanied by the stirring process and reaches 65% if without stirring. The optimum condition occurs at a height of 10 cm of UV light, exposure time of 5 minutes at a depth of 6 mm sample. The results showed a correlation between the reduction of the number of E. coli to UV light intensity, duration of exposure, depth of samples containing E. coli and the effect of stirring
