Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present comparative performance of two diferent nutrien sources in degrading crude oil contaminating a coastal environment. Organic and inorganic-based nutriens were compared in term of their efectiveness in the remediation of the contaminated environment. A ield test was conducted by discharging crude oil in prepared soil with various treatments. A regular monitoring was performed by measuring the concentration of the crude oil in the soil and the growth of microorganisms associated with the biodegradation processes. The experiments were done by a biostimulation method, in which natural microorganisms were stimulated by means of nutrien adding without introducing speciic isolated microorganisms. The hypothesis is that microorganisms potentially degrading oil (such as pseudomonas) have already existed in the soil before the contamination although the number might be small; the biostimulation is directed at providing suitable environment for faster growth of these microorganisms by various surface treatments, including nutrien adding. The study shows that the nutrien adding in the contaminated soil can enhance the biodegradation process and that the organic-based nutrien performed better than that the inorganic-based nutrien did Since the organic-based nutrien can be supplied from the products of garbage-composting, this inding gives a hope that in the future the bioremediation might be conducted in a simple, a cheaper way.
