    Abstract

    Deposition of particles in a porous structure substrate has been developed as applications of photocatalytic, filter membrane, and template for supporting materials in the field of energy and environment. This study aimed to obtain optimum conditions in aerosol deposition of particles on a substrate with a porous structure based on numerical simulations with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software. A CFD-based simulation method was used as an alternative to reduce some of condition variables that were difficult to control. Using CFD modeling required three stages of process, namely pre-processing, processing and postprocessing. The dimension to be used in CFD modeling was two-dimensional, where the wall had a length of 10 cm and a width of 2.5 cm. An analysis was conducted on the pattern of particle movements, speed of movement of the particles, and the amount of particles in the porous structure. Variables defined in this modeling were the distances from particles to the substrate and pore diameter of the substrate. While the particle size and fluid velocity were varied. The results showed that flow pattern and movement of the particles were determined by the fluid’s velocity. In addition, the smaller the used particles were, the more optimum the deposition that occured was, which would be achieved if the particles had a size of up to 36% of pore size. The optimum deposition also occured when the fluid’s flow was in a state of laminar and transition.
