      Abstract

      The goal of research is to examine removal efficiency of Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) reactor in treating wastewater from General Hospital Haji, Surabaya. Rotating Biological Contactor is biological wastewater treatment by using rotated discs which are turned around by axis with the certain speed. RBC has some advantages, for example the ease in operating, not require large area, some variations of parameter that could be controlled such as the speed of rotation disc, resirculation and detention time. The RBC reactor which was used in this study consisted of three stages. Each stage had 10 discs as the media for attaching the microbes. The laboratory scale RBC reactor was made of polyvinyl chlorid. The design was as follows : the diameter of disc : 0,2 m, the length of the reactor : 0,3 m, submerged disc : 40 % and the volume of each stage : 3,6 l. This reserched used aerobic reactor, it called RBC and the variations are rotating disc 4 rpm, 6 rpm, 8 rpm, 10 rpm and 12 rpm, and detention time (td)1 hours, 1.5 hours, 2 hours, 2.5 hours, and 3 hours. Sample for this research is wastewater from General Hospital Haji, Surabaya. The parameter are COD and TSS. The result in this research shows that variations which efective to remove COD, are in rotating disc 4 rpm with 3 hours of detention time at 91,74 %. The result in this research shows that variations which efective to remove TSS, are in rotating disc 4 rpm with 3 hours of detention time at 94,70 %. The results of this research confirmed that RBC reactor could treat the General Hospital Haji wastewater. The concentration of all parameters in the effluent was bellow the standart quality threshold of wastewater for hospital. (Refers to Decree of Governor of East Java, No.61, 1999). The Changes of the speed of rotation disc significantly affected the removal aside efficiency for all parameters.
