Abstract

With the social media, a person can participate in communicating, sharing information, and to attract the friendship through the account of facebook. In indonesia, in particular, the current social media presence able to bring its own influence over how conversation conducted by a community. Roodebrug Surabaya is one of the community 's history, aims to share knowledge and insights for free. Roodebrug Surabaya trying to keep sharing using social media as a means of communicate in disseminating its activities. This research aims to find out what are the uses of social media as a means of communication for the community of Roodebrug Surabaya. This research uses descriptive qualitative research, and use the theory of computer mediated communication. Data was collected through interviews and documentation. The result of this research shows that the use of social media Facebook as a means of communication for the Roodebrug Surabaya is used as status and self esteem, as expressing identity, as giving and getting help, as affiliation and belonging, and a Sense of Community. Features that are often used to communicate is private messages, news feeds, photo's, event's, status updates, wall and chat.
